#1 Ernest Hemingway

To many, the writer Ernest Hemingway was best known for his heavy drinking, hunting and fishing however he did have a softer side to him. He was also a dedicated cat lover having 23 cats by 1945, he often named his cats ‘purr factories’ or ‘love sponges’. In 1935, Hemingway was visited by a ship captain who gave him a six-toed cat called snowball as a gift, soon after, the Hemingway estate was crawling with six-toed spawn which he named after famous people of the time such as Billie Holiday, Rudolph Valentino and Betty Grable. To this day, the hemingway home (now a museum) in Florida is still home to 55 of Snowballs mutant descendants.

In 1982, Bowie wrote a song dedicated to cat lovers called “Cat People” which was recorded with producer Giorgio Moroder for director Paul Schrader’s infamous film of the same name. The song was also featured in the film Inglourious Basterds.
